Hennessy Vandheur a self-taught photographer based in Los Angeles and New York. Hennessy's personal bio below:
Born in Indonesia in 1998, far from the worlds of fashion and art, my mother and I moved to America at the start of the new millennium to find ourselves a brighter future. When I was seven years old, she remarried and we all moved into a little place in sunny California. It didn't take long for the marriage to spiral out of control, and at the age of 14, I found myself alone on the streets with $200 to my name and a backpack full of clothes.
I like to think of this time as the period that shaped me into who I am as a person. Facing the harsh reality of survival, of not knowing where to sleep any given night, of having to carry a knife as I fought for my future, it was then that I discovered my love for photography. It first became a hobby to take my mind off things, turned into a small but burning passion, and then slowly evolved into my lifestyle and career.
Growing up in proximity to Los Angeles showed me early on a world of commercialism and temporary fame. Art has become about pleasing the consumers. Superficiality runs rampant in the avenues of Hollywood. I promised myself that I would never fall prey to this shallowness. I would be somebody of substance.
My work is a language of emotion, of heartbreak and reclamation, of finding oneself in this vast world of ours. It tells stories, written between me and my subjects as I capture their energy, their true selves, the side of them that only spontaneity and a certain level of intimate openness can show. I do not capture people, I capture their essence.
In many ways, I use my art to express my heart and soul. If you want to understand me, just look at my photos.
